Premium psychological horror

Evil Inside is a paid simulation that puts you in the center of a spiritual encounter. In this psychological horror from JanduSoft, you follow Mark as he decides to reach out to his recently departed mother—in a crime which his father was accused and arrested for. However, what starts out as an effort driven by grief immediately turns into a fight to save his life and his sanity.

Evil Inside makes sure to put as much thought and detail into its fully fleshed out location. It’s an indie alternative to From The Darkness.

Starts out strong, then loses steam later

At the center of it all, Evil Inside is a quest for a man’s search for answers and redemption, but with a lot of paranormal and horrible stuff in the middle. In this game, you’re tasked with gathering the fragments of a spiritual board after the seance goes horribly wrong. It features puzzles and exploration, with the variety of these challenges keeping the game interesting throughout its short run.

In terms of its designs, it does a good job of creating a variety of environments inside the house. There are homely areas and there are locations that use the standard horror room vibes. What makes these set designs even more impressive is that the horrors use some of them effectively, subverting expectations. However, some scares are predictable and use run-of-the-mill techniques.

Considering the price tag it comes with, the game feels like it lacks content. A full playthrough can be completed in under an hour, which is quite subpar for games of this price range. Also, despite the realistic design of the house, the fact that it’s the only location available can make the latter parts of the game underwhelming, environment-wise.

A more predictable P.T.

Owing to its premise and its length, Evil Inside feels like the Silent Hill teaser P.T., but with a lesser-developed story. It fails to follow through on the whole spiritual board thing, and it lacks other settings that make the abandoned house feel too predictable and too boring after a couple of minutes. As it stands now, it needs more content to be worthy of its price tag.

PROS

  • Makes the most out of its single location
  • Offers a promising story

CONS

  • Only has one location
  • Short playthrough
  • Some jumpscares are predictable
